We motored for a long way along the beach front of Cape May before getting to the inlet. Andrew had been worried about it as we have had a few bad experiences with inlets, but it was wide and calm. We even had a pod of dolphin welcoming us in, always a good sight!
We found a spot away from the underground cables and a submerged wreck and dropped anchor and tidied up the boat.
The following day, we decided to go for a stroll into the town. I had read that it is beautiful. What started as a stroll turned into a 6km walk.
We found the supermarket and then I saw a lovely church which we walked towards, which took us to the town center with a lovely area of small shops and restaurants.
We spotted a Tesla Cyber truck.
We then walked to the historical side of town where they have what they call the Gingerbread Houses.
The anchorage was very rolly as lots of boats went past continually. But we have been in worse so we survived.
We walked the following day as well but went in the other direction. It wasn’t as nice as the town side.
We saw Sam and June on Scoot in the anchorage. We had seen them in Chesapeake City. We met another couple on their boat Red Swift who Andrew has been following for a long time.
We waited another day, filled the tanks with water and prepared the boat for an overnight sail.
We didn’t want to leave too early as we figured it would take about 24 hours to get to Sandy Hook. So we only upped anchor at 9am on Wednesday 4 June and set off.
We didn’t want to go too fast but of course we were going 7 knots! The seas were very rolly with the waves coming from aft so we were surfing over the big swell.
Red Swift and Scoot left just after us and we watched their progress on AIS. At one point Red Swift was right next to us. Next thing they came zooting over and took photos of us which they put on their instagram page. They said they were bored.
As we passed Atlantic City, I reminisced about the time Matt and I were there for Karate Worlds.
We reefed the main and the headsail towards the end of the afternoon in preparation for the night shift.
I came on watch at 11pm and the wind had died right down but thankfully the seas were calm. It was lovely to be able to chat to Matt when it was morning for him. Usually we only start chatting after 12 SA time. Andrew came back on watch at around 3am and shook the reef in the headsail.
Moon set |
The wind died off completely and we started the engines at around 6:30 am and motored the rest of the way.
The skies are very murky because of the fires in Canada so we were unable to see the NY skyline when we arrived in Atlantic Highlands. This is the first bit of a hilly place we have seen in the States.
We spent a few days in Atlantic Highlands before heading to NYC!
